How do I know if I have storm damage? Can I see the damage myself?
Unless you’re trained on how to detect damage, most likely you won’t be able to see signs of it on your roof. Most inspectors will go on the roof to get a first hand look at the damage. Our advice to you is that if your neighborhood has been hit by a severe storm with wind and hail, ask for an inspection.
How do inspectors determine “damage” when they inspect your roof?
Both insurance adjusters and Exteriors Plus Midwest Inc. inspectors will be looking for what is known in the industry as “hits.” These occur when hailstones (usually golf ball size or larger) impact the roof. Inspectors will mark the hits with a circle of chalk, and then count how many are in a 10’ x 10’ area. The age of the roof and intensity of the storm can factor into the extent of the damage.
Why is it important to have my roof inspected when there are not any leaks? Large hail can damage the surface of the shingle, knocking the tiny rocks or “granules” off and exposing the asphalt layer. UV rays from the sun can then cause disintegration of the shingles and, over time, the life of your roof is compromised. Because it is hard to tell if you have suffered damage to your roof it is important that you ask for an inspection if severe storms have affected you.

How do I start?
Most insurance policies have an 800 number that you contact to file a claim. If you’re not sure, you can call the agent who sold you the policy and he/she will help you notify the company. Exteriors Plus Midwest Inc. can also assist you in this process if necessary.
Do I have to contact my insurance company right away?
We recommend that you call them as soon as possible. Most companies have a “window” of time after a storm has occurred and the company can inform you of these limitations when you contact them. If a severe weather event has occurred, the insurance companies will be bombarded with calls. It’s important that your home be on the list for evaluation so repairs can be made quickly. It is also important to have your roof and home inspected as soon as possible to prevent further damage to your property. Remember that hail damage can expose the asphalt layers on the roof, allowing the normal aging process to speed up.
Will my insurance company pay for all the damage?
Most insurance policies cover replacement cost on storm damage. Looking over your policy or contacting the insurance company directly will provide the specifications of your insurance policy.
